How to reach financial freedom in Malaysia, step by step

New to all this? Take it one step at a time, in this order. Each step makes the next one easier.

  1. Know where your money goes

Track every ringgit for one month. You can't plan for spending you can't see, and most people are surprised by what they find.

  2. Build a safety buffer

Keep 3 to 6 months of expenses somewhere safe and easy to reach, like a high-yield savings account, FD or money market fund. Then a surprise bill won't push you into debt.

  3. Clear expensive debt

Credit card balances can cost up to 18% a year, which is more than most investments will earn you. Paying them off is a guaranteed return.

  4. Keep more of what you earn

Tax reliefs for things like EPF, insurance, PRS, medical and lifestyle spending can add up. Claim everything you're entitled to.

  5. Invest steadily, keep costs low

EPF is your foundation. On top of it, invest a fixed amount every month in diversified, low-cost investments and leave them to grow. Being consistent matters more than timing the market.

  6. Find your number

How much is enough to stop working? Work out what you need, test it against good and bad markets, and see when you can get there.

My journey

Working towards financial freedom, in the open

I'm not a finance guru with everything figured out. I'm working towards financial freedom myself, and I'm sharing the journey as it happens.

That means the decisions I make, what I'm learning, what I'd do differently, and the tools I build when I can't find a good one for Malaysians.

If something I share helps you take one step forward, that's the whole point.
